Update on the Kiddos

It has been a while since I posted anything about my two kids. I've actually restrained myself quite a bit from bringing them into Star Wars. We did watch the first season of Star Wars Rebels together - my young daughter really latched on to Hera - not so much Sabine. Perhaps because she is more maternal and less violent, which matches her personality better.

But they haven't really seen much Star Wars since the first season ended many months ago. I was very surprised when both of them picked out Star Wars-themed costumes for Halloween this year. I figured by daughter in particular would choose My Little Pony since she is so into that franchise now. But she picked out a really cool Darth Vader dress and Hudson picked an awesome Kylo Ren costume. I got a retractable tri-bladed lightsaber from Target to match it.

We trick-or-treated at Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party at Disney's Magic Kingdom. We saw plenty of Star Wars costumes, but no other Kylro Rens! I got a nice compliment from the cast member who helped people off the Little Mermaid dark ride - "You are raising them right!".

My daughter is really into the John Williams music. We listen to the Imperial March on a regular basis. Normally she is very talkative, but one day when I was driving her to school and we were going through the ESB soundtrack, she was very quiet. I looked and saw her looking out the window lost in her thoughts, with a slight smile on her face. I asked her what she was thinking and she said she was imaging a Star Wars parade with her in the lead, but joined by her brother, my wife and I, and several of her friends.

You need to take a look at this web comic created by Daniel Warren Johnson. There are no words. There are no colors. But it is still very powerful. Someone over at Marvel needs to give this guy a Star Wars book to draw!

Revelations from Celebration Anaheim

Quick Editorial - I really hate the grammatical misuse of the word "reveal". I cringe whenever I hear or read, "...did hear about the big reveal at the show last night?" There is a word for this people, it is revelation. It's not that hard. Okay, enough of my grumpy old man talk.

While I may not be there in person, thanks to the miracle of social media, there is plenty for a virtual attendee to see and hear. Below are my highlights from the first full day of the convention, in no particular order.

BATTLEFRONT

I am not much a video game player anymore. The game will give us a first view of Sullust (based on the environment of Iceland no less!). 

But what I am most excited about is that there will be a playable level for the Battle of Jakku. So we will get to see how that crashed Star Destroyer in the second teaser trailer got there! Apparently the battle takes place one year after the Battle of Endor.  I'm looking forward to seeing You Tube videos of people playing that one.

Is that Anakin's lightsaber on top of Luke's?!

Add Battlefront: Twilight Company to the list of publications hitting this fall. This will be written by Alexander Freed. 

Also coming this fall as part of the Journey to The Force Awakens series is the novel Shattered Empire by Greg Rucka.

Alan Dean Foster will be writing the novelization of The Force Awakens, which will be released digitally on the same day as the film and a hardcover coming the following month in January.

My Star Wars Bracket

I have never been a huge basketball fan, but I always enjoy filling out a bracket for the NCAA tournament. With Star Wars fandom building to a fevered pitch with the release of The Force Awakens this December, I am more actively watching who will be the This Is Madness tournament over at starwars.com!

But since I missed the deadline to submit a bracket on Wookieepedia (darn it!), I thought I would write it up here on my blog.

I missed out on the Play In round, but here were the match-ups:

I'm curious what kind of showing the Rebels characters will have. They are so new to the galaxy, I can't imagine them upsetting Artoo or Leia. I think Artoo will have the sentimental attachment of people to vote him through. REVIEW: I nailed this bracket at least. It is hard to beat a character that has been in every Star Wars movie...at least to date!

This is the most interesting bracket. I think Yoda will trounce Qui-Gon, but Obi-Wan may struggle against Ahsoka. Still, I think it will still be a showdown with the past two winners and Yoda being the victor. REVIEW: Alas, Ahsoka...you were able to top Luke but Obi-Wan proved to be too strong. But you had the strongest showing of any non-film character. Well done! It is hard to beat one of the few characters who has been in every Star Wars movie and many Clone Wars episodes! Obi-Wan ekes out a win over Yoda! I knew it would be close, but I guessed wrong.

SCOUNDRELS

1 Chewie v 4 Zeb - WINNER: Chewie   [Chewie 85%]
2 Han v 3 Lando - WINNER: Han   [Han 86%]
Han v Chewie - WINNER: Han   [Han 69%]

Another Rebels character going up against Star Wars royalty. No way Zeb can pull this upset. Han should pull past Lando, even if he is a slimy, no-good swindler. Han against Chewie?! I have to give it to Han. REVIEW: Han destroyed Lando. I think this bodes well for his chances throughout this tournament! No love for the new "kid" on the block - Zeb. But this was hardly an even match-up! Nailed this bracket too, but this wasn't really hard to pick.

REPUBLIC

1 Padme v 4 Jar Jar - WINNER: Padme   [Jar Jar 62%]
2 Rex v 3 Gregor - WINNER: Rex   [Rex 75%]
Padme v Rex  - WINNER:Rex   [Rex 52%]

Yeesh. My faith in fandom will be confirmed if Rex emerges victorious from this bracket! REVIEW: Jar Jar beats Padme?! Bwah-hah-hah! I love it! Star Wars fans are the best. Rex squeeks by Jar Jar to advance. Phew! That was close. My bracket Republic bracket is saved!

EMPIRE/SEPARATISTS

2 Grievous v 3 Inquisitor - WINNER: Grievous   [Grievous 66%]

Tarkin is just too skilled and ruthless for any of these to oppose him. REVIEW: I am a little bit surprised at the turn out for the Inquisitor. So far the strongest showing of a Rebels character in the tournament. Of course, match-ups are everything! Tarkin emerges victorious as expected.

BOUNTY HUNTERS

1 Boba Fett v Asajj Ventress - WINNER: Boba Fett   [Boba 66%]
2 Jango Fett v 3 Greedo - WINNER: Jango Fett   [Jango 83%]
Boba vs Jango  - WINNER: Boba   [Boba 53%]

I really want Asajj to win. I am just burned out on the whol Mandalore/Fett thing. But you have to recognize brand awareness and Boba has it. Jango should fry poor Greedo without a problem. Father versus "son"? I'll choose the son. REVIEW: *Yawn*. Predictable and not terribly interesting.

SITH

2 Emperor Palpatine v 3 Darth Maul - WINNER: Maul   [Maul 51%]

This bracket is actually a bit tricky! The Maul-Emperor match-up could be close. But, regardless, Vader will come out of the Sith bracket on top. REVIEW: Maul ekes out a win over his former master! I was not expecting it to be that close. Vader decapitates Dooku a second time....well first time as Vader...last time he was Anakin...although he was a little Vader...you get the picture. Vader to Maul: "You don't know the POWER of the Dark Side!"

UNDERWORLD

1 Jabba v 4 Bib Fortuna - WINNER: Jabba   [Jabba 56%]
2 Pre Vizsla v 3 Hondo Ohnaka - WINNER: Hondo   [Pre Vizsla 56%]
Jabba v Hondo - WINNER: Jabba   [Jabba 67%]

Jabba versus his underling? Pleease. Pre Vizsla versus Hondo is more interesting. I really don't like Pre Vizsla as a character very much whereas Hondo is a lot of fun. I hope he makes it into Rebels? Either way, Jabba owns the Underworld bracket. REVIEW: I'm actually surprised that Jabba beat Bib by only six percent. That is a strong showing for a sychophant! Pre Vizsla wins because he is a Mando...*groan*. Hondo is such a better character. Jabba made short work of him.

32 & 16 WRAP UP: I am in very good shape so far. I lost Yoda for Duel of the Eights, but all my other picks are still viable. Jar Jar over Padme was my biggest surprise. I wonder with him being subject to 15 years of fandom hatred that people are coming around to liking him. Mandos are still a powerful draw for fans but I don't think anyone can overcome Jabba in the Underworld bracket.

Now we move on to the Duel of the Eights:

Artoo v Yoda - WINNER: Artoo  [Obi-Wan 60%]

Goodness this is a hard one. I am going with who I *hope* will win, but Yoda is a previous champion. Maybe the fans will want a new winner this year? REVIEW: With Obi-Wan beating Yoda in the previous round, I missed out on this one. Obi-Wan beats Artoo?! Nooooooooo! He may not recall owning a droid, but he owned this match-up.

Han v Rex - WINNER: Han   [Han 52%]

I love Captain Rex, but Han makes even a hardened princess swoon. I'll bet he will do the same with the voters. REVIEW: Wow this was *much* closer than I expected. Not bad for a clone!

Tarkin v Boba - WINNER: Boba   [Boba 59%]

I want Tarkin to win, but I think the Boba-bunch will marshall the votes to push him through. REVIEW: Fett is cruising in his 'vette to the Fate of the Four.

Vader v Jabba - WINNER: Vader   [Vader 54%]

Yeah, I don't think this will be that close. REVIEW: Whoa. Jabba almost pulled off an upset!

Now for the Fate of the Four:

Artoo v Han - WINNER: Han   [Obi-Wan 50%]

Man this is getting really hard now! As much as I want Artoo to win it all, I think everyone is cheering for Han. We know he has a prominent role in The Force Awakens and Harrison Ford managed to be a real-life hero when he safely landed his stalled airplane on a golf course in the heavily populated area around the Santa Monica airport. Han will win this.  REVIEW: Man! You can't get any closer than this! I demand a recount!

Boba v Vader - WINNER: Vader   [Vader 6%]

Brand names can only take you so far. Vader will be unleashed and Boba will be bantha poo doo.  REVIEW: This went as I expected.

Star Wars Day in Review

Well another Star Wars Day is in the books. I must say it is becoming a bigger deal each year. Of course having a slew of movies coming out, with casting announcements less than a week old, and a new television series on the way, does not hurt either!

In terms of news there really wasn't any great revelation. But with bombshells like the EU reboot and the Episode VII casting announcement, it is hard to top that! It was nice getting the full trailer for Rebels. It looks like a great show! I'm really looking forward to it. 

I think part of the issue was that the 4th was on a Sunday this year. Apparently that is not a good day in Hollywood to do major promotion work. I'm pleasantly surprised by this. 

It was awesome getting a short video from J.J. and Lawrence Kasdan wishing everyone a happy SW day! I loved seeing all the celebrities, from Wil Wheaton to Samuel L. Jackson, to new celeb John Boyega get into the spirit of things via Twitter and Facebook. 

There were some great shopping deals this year. Last year I got the enormous Blueprints hardcover book for a fantastic price plus a tee shirt from We Love Fine that has the Boba Fett logo on it. It is a pretty obscure SW reference and I have yet to meet someone who recognizes it outright. Quite a few think it is a Fender reference, given the "F" shape in it.

Well there were a lot more tee shirt options this year! I was disappointed in TeeFury's offerings this year - there were two - one was boring and the other just weird (a psychedelic Yoda). Fortunately We Love Fine had a great selection. I spent quite a bit of time yesterday studying the shirts. I like ones that have subtle references and are styled in a unique way. I picked out two but waited to order them on May 4th since it was 25% off. 

One thing I missed out on was the free May the Fourth pin over at Think Geek. You only had to spend $20 to get it. I put it off to tomorrow and they sold out. At least they still had the 20% deal for Star Wars merchandise. 

Lastly, over on Amazon I got a few graphic novels on Kindle. I'm not a huge comic book reader and the EU reboot makes this not as important reading, but 90% off is too good to pass up for some titles. 

Anyway, all in all it was a great Star Wars Day!

This deal's getting better all the time!

Verily, A New Hope (Book Review)

I love Shakespeare. One of my favorite classes in high school was an English class focusing exclusively on the bard and his plays. We studied Hamlet thoroughly in the lead up to the film release of the play starring Mel Gibson (yes I am old). I'll never forget the time when we had a class field trip to see the movie that as we were laughing at Shakespeare's jokes, I overheared a pair of elderly ladies trying to understand what was funny.

So when I heard of Shakespeare's Star Wars - it was a truly Reese's Peanut Butter Cup moment - chocolate and peanut butter? Awesome! Now having read the book, I must say author Ian Doescher delivered a fantastic work!

All of the hallmarks of a Shakespeare play are clearly evident even to the non-scholar like me:

• The play is in five acts
• There is minimal stage direction
• Rhyming couplets close each scene
• Characters have "asides" (what we call "breaking the fourth wall" now)
• Soliloquies (asides that are delivered alone on stage)
• Use of iambic pentameter

He references several of the tragedies, namely Hamlet, Romeo & Juliet, King Lear, and MacBeth. He also refers to several histories: Henry V, Richard III, and Julius Caesar. There is also a bit from As You Like It and even a few sonnets in there too!

But you can tell that Doescher is not just a Shakespeare fan but is truly a Star Wars fan as well. He didn't simply take the Episode IV script and shakespeare-ize it, he truly did an interpretation of it. There are extended scenes, like the tragic tale of stormtrooper TK-421 who correctly theorizes that the droids they are looking for are hidden the Falcon. His partner talks him out of it and they are called up the gangplank to give some help - and the rest is history!

He employs R2-D2 as a character like the Fool from King Lear in that he speaks truth but no one believes or understands him. This is done wonderfully when Artoo  has spoken "asides" in English.

In closing, I thought I would take a moment to describe what iambic pentameter is. Many people know that is how Shakespeare wrote his plays but few really understand what the heck this phrase means! Iamb means two syllables in a soft-STRESSED arrangement, such as "en-JOY". Pentameter means there should be five iambs in a line.

Here is an example of iambic pentameter:

I'd RATHer BE a HAMmer THAN a NAIL

Note though that Shakespeare did not exclusively use iambic pentameter in his plays. When it came to words spoken by characters of a lower social class, he would use regular prose instead. He would also sometimes intentionally break the rules of iambic pentameter: "to BE or NOT to BE that IS the QUESTion.". That last "-ion" is a weak ending that extends past the five iambs. The author, Ian Doescher, stated that even though he was much more rigorous in following iambic pentameter than Shakespeare ever was, he still has about a dozen lines that break this pattern in his book.

Star Wars on QuizUp

I first learned about the mobile phone trivia game, QuizUp, on the fantastic Star Wars news site, Jedi News. They were spreading the word that the Star Wars OT topic was just posted on the app. OT is short for Original Trilogy, which is my personal favorite time period for the Star Wars saga. Since downloading the app I have been hooked on it! Not only do they have Star Wars OT, but also a Star Wars topic that spans all six films.

You can challenge your friends and family and see how you rank with people nearby, in your state, in your country, and in the world. It is a blast taking on a trivia challenge with someone in Singapore, then the UK, then Texas.

But the app has much more than Star Wars trivia - a lot more. There is a topic for just about any subject you can think of - 18th Century History, Name That Food, Harry Potter Spells, Logos, Disney, Jane Austen, Downton Abbey, Grammar, and even Star Trek (just to name a few).

Now just today, the Star Wars Expanded Universe just went live. I am excited for many reasons, but I must admit one of those reasons is that I wrote about 250 of the questions! I hope I did a good enough job and that everyone enjoys them.

If you haven't tried the app yet, you should! The Android version came out just a day or two ago, so it should be widely available now.
